What has been achieved since Nutshell #1

With the Seminar outputs reviewed and the Foundation Paper drafted, discussion with leadership of the Wits Business School has set out the way forward. A curricula for Master of Management in the field of African Philanthropy is now under preparation. To fit within WBS and the South African system of accreditation the design will be based on four required core courses: The Basics of African Gifting and Philanthropy; Organisation and Management; Resourcing; and Measuring Performance. A number of electives will serve different stakeholders’ needs. Examples are: advisers to private wealth and corporate social investment; community gifting practices; community foundations; gifting and the sustainable development goals (SDGs); public policy and law, etc. A student will select three. The accreditation formal the accreditation process from WBS into the Wits University and national system should start in July. It is anticipated to take 18 months. The MM would be offered in 2018 probably with a block release teaching schedule that would make it more practical for those not in the country. In the shorter term, Executive
Education topics are under discussion that would range from 2 hour to 2 or even four day events, perhaps offered outside of South Africa. More information will be found in subsequent nutshells.

A Communications strategy guides information outreach, including hosting of resource portal, with links to other sites, such as Trust Africa and a blog facility that I would encourage you to use in addition to your own outreach. The next Nutshell will give links to the Chair’s web page which is being upgraded as part and parcel of a re-launch of the WBS website. An article about the Ford Foundation’s long involvement in establishing the Chair is published as part of the celebration of 25 years since the establishment of a platform and network for ex-staff members. In addition, I was a member of a radio panel discussing a new
report on private philanthropy in South Africa.

Networking has moved ahead. In Ghana, last month research assistant Gideon Boako took part in two conferences – the Africa Network of the International Society for Third Sector Research, the other on Impact Investing. He will be writing a blog about each.

Looking ahead

Collaboration is being explored with the African Philanthropy Forum (APN), starting with gathering their ideas about curricula content. Participation on the APN 2016 conference in Morocco is in discussion.
A major ongoing effort is design a pan-African research design seminar for the Chair to be held in the second half of this year. If all goes well, this event will be in collaboration with the Partnership for African Social and Governance Research (PASGR) which is lead by Dr. Tade Aina, co-editor with Bheki Moyo of Giving to Help, Helping to Give, the first volume dedicated to African Gifting.
Steve Bluen, Head of WBS, will be providing information about the Chair at a meeting of the African Association of Business Schools to be held in Lagos late this month. I will be doing something similar at the European Foundation Centre’s conference in Amsterdam. Finally, a profile for a full time professor is being drafted and should be ready in June. Suggestions about potential candidates are most, most welcome.
